
The global demand for refrigerated containers is enormously increasing. According to Drewry, reefer containership fleet is set to grow 20% by 2018 (source: Drewry 2015/16). Volume wise meat, fish/seafood and banana shipments are the drivers for that growth (source: Drewry 2014/15). Today, about seventy-eight (source: Drewry 2014/15) percent of perishable reefer trade is currently transported on container carriers. That figure is poised to expand further. However, despite the positive outlook, the shipping industry is currently not able to exploit the full potential. Tough market and low profibility as well as the fact of capital intensive nature of the Global reefer shipping market, have forced carriers to revise their strategy, pool their resources or even shut down their investment program.
