Hamburg Süd implements Port Congestion Surcharge for Reefer shipments
July 15,2020
Reefer cargo to Yantian, China
Dear customer,
We would like to inform you that the terminal density yard for reefer containers in Yantian has reached critical levels and we are facing very limited plug availability. We are currently being forced to divert cargo to other ports due to this situation.
We recommend customers, when possible, to ship to other Chinese destinations, especially the nearby ports of Nansha or Shekou, or other markets in order to avoid the congested ports. This recommendation is in particular for transit time-sensitive, perishable, chilled commodities with a limited/short shelf life, e.g. fruit/vegetables and frozen meat. For cargo already in transit, we will offer free change of destination for those customers who decides to divert the cargo to other Chinese destinations.
Hamburg Süd will, until further notice, continue accepting reefer bookings into Yantian under following conditions:
- We will not be able to guarantee the cargo routing nor take any responsibility for the delivery time. Cargo arriving in the port of Yantian is being diverted to alternative locations until the port is able to receive reefers again. This situation is outside of our control and is also affecting cargo already in transit to mentioned destination port.
- For any bookings in place where the container has not been picked up before 15th July 2020, or any new bookings from the same date, Hamburg Süd will apply, effective 16th July 2020, a congestion surcharge of USD 1,000 per container for ALL reefer cargo booked to Yantian to cover the additional cost of re-routing. For regulated corridors the starting date will be 16th of August 2020.
Thank you for your understanding. If you have any question, please feel free to
